Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu met with the country's leader Kim Jong-un during his visit to North Korea.
The Russian Defense Minister visited the country this week to participate in North Korea's 'Victory Day' celebrations. A Chinese delegation is also visiting North Korea for the same reason.
This is the first time a Russian defense minister has visited North Korea since the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1990s.
According to North Korean media, Shoigu gave a letter from Russian President Vladimir Putin to Kim Jong Un.
Kim-Jong Un thanked Putin for sending a military delegation to North Korea led by the Russian Defense Minister.
Kim-Jong Un said the visit deepened the strategic and traditional relationship between North Korea and Russia.
The North Korean leader has repeatedly stated his firm belief that the Russian army and people will achieve great success in the struggle to build a strong country.
North Korean state media did not mention the Russia-Ukraine war in Kim Jong-un's quotes. But North Korean Defense Minister Kang San Nam said Pyongyang has full support for Russia's fight for justice. At the same time, North Korea has full support for Moscow on the issue of protecting Russia's sovereignty.
The Russian Defense Minister was welcomed at the airport by senior military officers of North Korea. The Russian defense minister is accompanied by a group of representatives of the country.
Meanwhile, the Chinese delegation led by Li Hongzhong, a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China, also arrived in North Korea. Foreign representatives will attend the first Victory Day ceremony in the country in the post-corona era.
Russian Defense Minister Shoigu said the visit will improve relations between the two countries.
North Korea's state news agency said a historic parade will be held to mark Victory Day and state guests from Russia and China will be attend in this huge parade.
North Korea's relationship with the United States is at a low point. The US is conducting military exercises with its ally South Korea. The US has sent a warship that can launch nuclear weapons to South Korea.
In response, North Korea has conducted a series of missile tests. They have conducted three missile tests in the past week. Since 2022, they have conducted hundreds of missile tests.
