In a crucial meeting,Doval-Sullivan,the Indian and US National Security Advisors (NSAs) respectively, are set to discuss the pressing security concerns in the Indo-Pacific region. The talks will center around the escalating Chinese surveillance activities in the Bay of Bengal and the growing presence of the PLA Navy. This meeting comes amid heightened tensions with China's aggressive stance towards Taiwan and its strategic maneuvers using Myanmar to gain access to the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean.

During the delegation-level talks,NSA Sullivan will also have a separate meeting with S Jaishankar, the Indian External Affairs Minister.

The focus of the discussions will be on addressing the challenges posed by China's continued belligerence.Notably,US Indo-Pacific Coordinator Kurt Campbell will be accompanying Sullivan, underscoring the significance of the Indo-Pacific region in their strategic agenda.

The situation in the Bay of Bengal is of utmost concern, as China closely monitors Indian activities through intelligence gathering facilities established in Myanmar's Coco Island. Additionally,China's recent security pact with Solomon Islands in the Pacific further amplifies the expansion of PLA Navy's presence in the Indo-Pacific.Both the United States and India view these developments as alarming, given the repeated intrusions by PLA military aircraft and warships into Taiwan's air identification zones,as well as the ongoing standoff with the Indian Army in East Ladakh.

NSA Sullivan and NSA Doval engaged in a constructive dialogue on global security matters, demonstrating their commitment to bilateral cooperation. The positive interaction between the two was highlighted by the newly appointed US ambassador to India,Eric Garcetti, who praised the Indian NSA as an"international treasure"during their recent meeting at Sardar Patel Bhawan.Garcetti's familiarity with Hindi and Urdu, along with his extensive travel experience in India, adds depth to the growing partnership between the nations.

China's ambitious Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) includes investments in the Myanmar-Bangladesh corridor to secure access to the Bay of Bengal. These endeavors, coupled with China's ongoing investments in Pakistan, indicate President Xi Jinping's aspirations to exert dominance in the Indian Ocean.Furthermore,China has established a significant foothold in African countries through burdensome debts created by the BRI.

Adding to the concerns,China has been actively engaging with Sunni-Shia powers in the Middle East,as evidenced by its investments in Port Khalifa in the UAE.In response,Saudi Arabia has chosen to invest in oil refineries in China instead of other Sunni nations. To counter China's BRI initiative, the United States and India, along with the UAE,held talks with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Riyadh on May 7 to establish railroad infrastructure in the Sunni Middle East.

The Indo-Pacific region is at a critical juncture, with security challenges posed by China demanding immediate attention. The Doval-Sullivan discussions aim to strengthen collaboration between India and the United States, as well as with regional allies,to effectively counter China's disruptive activities and safeguard the stability and peace of the Indo-pacific.
