As per rules, a no-confidence motion against the government requires the support of at least 50 members of the Lok Sabha to be tabled and passed. Once the motion is accepted, the Speaker announces the polling date within 10 days. If the government fails to prove its majority, it has to resign.
According to the BBC, the first of the two proposals submitted by the Congress MP was accepted on Wednesday. Speaker Om Birla said he will discuss the proposal and announce the date for the vote after a meeting with all party leaders.
The opposition has been demanding a statement from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the situation in Manipur.
The opposition moved a no-confidence motion against the government in the Lok Sabha to make Modi answerable in Parliament. But Modi will have no problem passing the test of no confidence vote. Because the NDA, an alliance of Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has a clear majority in Parliament. Opponents of introducing this proposal knowing that it will be a 'defeat', say that this move will force Modi to at least talk about Manipur.
