"Ethnic Violence Escalates:Armed Assailants Clash with Security Forces,Leaving 9 Dead and 10 Injured in Manipur"

In a harrowing incident that unfolded in Agijang village, the border region straddling Imphal East and Kangpokpi districts,a group of armed assailants initiated a fierce gunfight with security forces. The confrontation, which occurred between 10:00 PM and 10:30 PM on Tuesday, has resulted in a tragic toll, with nine individuals losing their lives and ten others sustaining injuries,as confirmed by local authorities on Wednesday.

The clash erupted when security forces swiftly responded to counter the armed assailants who had descended upon the village amidst the ongoing ethnic violence that has plagued Manipur.Imphal East police superintendent K Shivakanta Singh stated,"Firing ensued in the village around 10:00 PM to 10:30 PM,claiming the lives of nine individuals and leaving ten others wounded. The injured victims have been promptly admitted to the hospital, where one individual remains in critical condition."

Responsibility for maintaining security in the affected area lies with the Assam Rifles.Singh further assured that the situation is now under control, thanks to the prompt intervention of security forces.

Since the eruption of violence on May 3,the tribal Kuki community residing in the hill districts and the dominant Meitei community in Imphal Valley, have been locked in a deadly conflict, resulting in a staggering death toll of 115 lives lost and displacing around 40,000 individuals. The unrest was initially triggered by a protest against a court order granting scheduled tribe status to the Meitei community, leading to an escalation of violence throughout the state.

Authorities swiftly implemented measures to restore order, imposing a curfew and suspending internet services.Additional security forces were urgently deployed to the state to quell the clashes.Despite these efforts, tensions have continued to simmer.

On June 1,Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the formation of a peace committee, aimed at mitigating the conflict. However, prominent civil society organizations from both the Meitei and Kuki communities declined to participate in the committee's efforts to broker peace in the state. The complexity of the situation underscores the immense challenges faced by authorities in restoring harmony and stability in Manipur.
